This lecture series, presented by the Institute for Applied Critical Thinking is a product from years of experience, research and the collaboration of two Baby Boomers’ passionate work on critical thinking and making life fulfilling. Beginning as a graduate level course at a prestigious university in California, Patrick Davis, MSW Director and Founder of iACT-now, was encouraged to develop public lectures so adults of all ages could benefit from research on the unique, epic challenges facing America and the Baby Boomer generation in the 21st Century. These lectures are about understanding the meaning of adulthood and beyond within the context of contemporary society. Our focus is on events that alter our lives (some appearing for the first time in American history), along with lifestyle changes that challenge us and require new life transition skills. This Baby Boomer Lecture Series with wine and cheese offers a review of the competencies and skill sets adults need to assess challenges, reinvent themselves and thrive in the 21st Century and explores questions such as: How are these competencies and skills acquired? Are they universal? Are they old standards or evolutionary? Can they be learned, relearned or must they be rooted in experience? What happens to an adult who chooses to function without contemporary competencies and skills? Finally, this lecture series is founded on the belief that accomplished adults, particularly lifelong learning Baby Boomer, are eager to take responsibility for securing justice and making life fulfilling. Our perspective recommends a theory of adult intervention that is practical in various life settings for all accomplished adults. It also proposes that competencies and skills are broadly applicable to practitioners for themselves as well as their clientele. The believe the essential question we all must ask is: “What must we know about our own journey as adults across the lifespan?” The four lectures address and investigate the most challenging adult questions as determined by our research, experience and anecdotal data. The questions are:
Lecture #1: “Seven (non-financial) Challenges to Successful Retirement (Second Adulthood) Baby Boomers are re-writing the playbook on retirement by postponing and redefining it. How do you know if you are ready for one of the most significant transitions in adulthood? You are ready if you can you answer five simple questions… Lecture #2: “Second Adulthood: What it Means and How You Get One” Retirement, contrary to popular belief, is not the finish line. There are other, exciting possibilities for older adults, such as, launching a Second Adulthood. Find out what this is and whether you want one. Lecture #3: “Aging – Gracefully and with Purpose” Aging is not for the faint of heart. Aging gracefully requires awareness, accurate information, and life management skills. Finding life purpose poses a different set of challenges and demands on each of us. Learn how they go together. Lecture #4: “Late Life Conundrums: Helping Aging Parents, Boomerang Children” Baby Boomers are the first generation to be assisting aging parents and needy adult children (or grandchildren) simultaneously—they are literally sandwiched! This situation can be costly and frustrating. It can also require Boomers to postpone their post-retirement dreams. Let’s talk about some “Do’s and Don’ts.”
