A lecture series should be about taking a complex life experiences and focus on key elements that bring clarity and understanding to participants.  The Nourish Your Mind Lecture Series presented by the Institute for Applied Critical Thinking attempts to do just that.

Our focus is to explore events that alter our lives (some appearing for the first time in American history), along with lifestyle changes that challenge us and require new life transition skills.  The Nourish Your Mind Lecture Series offers a review of the competencies and skill sets adults need to assess challenges, reinvent themselves, thrive in the 21st Century and explore questions such as:  What do I need to know to retire?  What are the challenges and are they universal, old standards or evolutionary, can they be learned, relearned or must they be rooted in experience? What happens to an adult who chooses to function without contemporary competencies and skills?

In 21st Century America, one of the significant life transitions is retirement.  Many Americans entering their 6th decade of life may have prepared the financial portion of retirement, but are  unprepared to negotiate the social and psychological aspects of a post-career lifestyle.

The Institute of Applied Critical Thinking, Nourish Your Mind Lecture Series is about:

defining retirement and the seven challenges,

planning and living a life in retirement,

understanding new roles, obligations, responsibilities and opportunities in post-career life,

discovering our maturity, the value of our experiences and wisdom, and

developing conversations about important end-of-life considerations.

Finally, this lecture series is founded on the belief that accomplished adults, particularly lifelong learns, are eager to take responsibility for securing justice and making life fulfilling.  Our perspective recommends a theory of adult intervention that is practical in various life settings for all accomplished adults.  It also proposes that competencies and skills are broadly applicable to practitioners for  themselves as well as their clientele.

The five lectures are:

Lecture #1:  Seven (non-financial) Challenges to Successful Retirement (Second Adulthood) -Thursday, March 25, 2010 6:30 - 8:30 pm

Retirement in 21st Century America is very different from that of our grandparents’.  From the research we have found, there are seven challenges to successful retirement and in this lecture we will identify each challenge and discuss strategies to overcome them.

Lecture #2:   Are you "Sandwiched" In-between? Helping Aging Parents and Supporting Boomerang Children - Thursday, April 8, 2010 / 6:30 - 8:30pm

Seventeen million American families are caught sandwiched in-between helping aging parents and supporting boomerang children/grandchildren.  It is their daily emotional, social and economic reality and part of an ever growing 21st Century phenomenon called the ‘Sandwich Generation.’  If this is you or you know someone that is sandwiched, join us for discussion on what to know, the resources available, and the do's and don't.

Lecture #3:  Aging – Gracefully and with Purpose  - Thursday, April 22, 2010 / 6:30 - 8:30pm

Aging gracefully is a process of discovering our maturity, of valuing our experiences and wisdom that comes from lifelong learning, curiosity, optimism and creativity. With 2-3 decades of living beyond traditional retirement likely, it is important to explore the new wonders of growing old, understanding the best may lies ahead and plan what you leave behind.

Lecture #4:  Women, Retirement and the Power in Aging - Thursday May, 13, 2010 / 6:30 - 8:30pm

As a growing force of a generation known for affecting change, how will women change the face of retirement? Change the view of aging?  How will the virtues of mature women influence our social structure, communities and relationships?    We will explore these questions, examine the goals of others that use the power of aging to make a difference and explore your power and wisdom to create a next life chapter.

Lecture #5 Important Questions:  A Conversation about Caregiving and End-of-Life Considerations - Thursday May 27, 2010 / 6:30 - 8:30pm

The ‘gift’ of longevity has made it possible for millions of Americans to enter old age by way of medical crisis; a contemporary rite of passage that brings us face to face with our mortality and that of our loved ones. It is difficult to start a conversation about preparing for the inevitable.  But in contemporary America there is a growing need to have open discussion.  We will focus on learning communication techniques, following assessment tools, and using easy-to-follow rules of engagement that will move everyone to a productive dialogue.
