“Late Life Conundrums: Helping Aging Parents, Boomerang Children and End-of-Life Considerations”

http://interwork.sdsu.edu/boomerlectures/images/sandwich_generation.jpgBaby Boomers are not the first generation to be assisting aging parents and needy adult children (or grandchildren) simultaneously.  But they are the first generation and likely not to be the last to be ‘sandwiched in between’ these responsibilities and preparing for their own retirement and post-career plans! Without understanding, planning and establishing a support system, the “Sandwich phenomenon” is costly, frustrating, confusing, even overwhelming. It can also require Baby Boomers to change or postpone many life plans, including extend working and postpone post-retirement dreams.

The “Sandwich phenomenon” is being driven by the “Gift of longevity" and the Baby Boomers will be the first recipients of the full impact.  Today, it is not uncommon for a family to have five generations alive simultaneously.  The implications are clear.  As Baby Boomers live longer, their responsibilities and roles as parents, spouses, and providers are being extended into later adulthood.  Caring for aging parents and supporting adult children and grandchildren are additional adult obligations that are becoming more commonplace.

Further, there is more of a need than ever to consider ‘end-of-life’ issues.  Preparing our aging family members, and ourselves for the inevitable, Baby Boomers must grapple with —pre-planning final arrangements, end-of-life care, beneficiaries and legacies. All of this, is more than a “balancing act of adult life,” it’s about integrating the complexity and stress of our lives without losing ourselves.

This lecture will touch on all of the above, and offer some practical “Do’s and Don’ts.”

Lecturer:  Patrick H. Davis, MSW, Director, Institute of Applied Critical Thinking (iACT)
